Question:

Let's see who's smart. Where in my bedroom should I put my electric fans?

I don't have AC and I need to cool down my bedroom. I have two big electric fans and I want to know where exactly I should position them in my room for maximum effect. I have one window on the south wall and one door on the northwest corner. I need to keep the door shut because I sleep in the afternoons and it's quieter with the door shut and it keeps my roommate's dog out. Also, my room is on the second floor right underneath the roof and our carport is right outside under my window, which refects a lot of sunlight up. My bed can be moved to any position and the cords on the fans are long enough that they can be placed in any location and point in any direction. So who's smartest? Where should I put each fan. Please support your opinion with a somewhat scientific explanation.

  1. Mike..the nw side of the house is probably hotter than the  south in the after noon BUT if the garage roof is heat-sinking and your pulling air off the hot roof your in a big fix....if i was you i would pull air from both and measure the temp at the right time then after finding the coolest path set up one pulling air in and one pushing out to created a cross draft...However a small 110vac window unit sure sounds a lot better....There ya go from the E...

  2. Any rock-and-roller will tell you that it's OK to have fans in your bus, or hotel room, but keep them the h**l out of your bedroom.

That can get really expensive, Man.

And, for Pete's sake, unless you're into some serious freak-action, forget all about those LARGE fans - whether they've got electric things or not....

  3. does it freaking matter, if u go your whole life thinking like this your not going to get anywhere. just put the fans on opposite sides of the room

  4. What You want to DO, is have the Air circulating WITHOUT the fans blowing right ON you! So what I'D do- is put a fan on the floor in diagonal corners of the room & have them blowing up at the ceiling over the bed. This would result in a gentle "settling breeze" down ONTO the bed- Much as a Ceiling Fan would! The room would be evenly cooled- & YOU wouldn't end up dying of thirst from having a fan blowing on You while you slept!  :)

  5. live somewhere else geek. No one will ever think of putting two large fans whose uses are industrial and you're gonna use it to cool just a room? What the h**l do you want, some Windy Land or something? Then here's the solution: put your bed beside the windows.

  6. ok wherever your room is facing doesn't actually matter for the maximum effect. So following convection currents I would say the best way would probably be to keep the your bed in the middle and have one fan on either side of the bed (on the walls, one high the other lower). this will make sure that when you are sleeping the circulation of air will always keep hitting you in the rotation, if you keep your fan like the position i said the high fan's, the cool air will keep hitting you in the high areas and the low fans keep hitting you in the low areas

there you go hope that helps

PS- you can always change the speed of the fan depending on how you want it. You asked for the maximum effect so here it is
