Let Ricky Ponting be the judge of when he should retire: Shane Warne
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s under-fire skipper Ricky Ponting has found support from one of his former comrades Shane Warne. Siding with Ponting, Shane insisted that Ponting is the only one who knows best when the time is right for him to say goodbye to the game.
Warne stressed that this was not the time to take rash decisions based on emotions due to Australia’s ouster from the ongoing ICC World Cup, 2011. The Kangaroos were defeated by India in the second quarter-final on Thursday. This will be the first time in
sixteen years that Australia will not be featuring in the final of the mega event.
“One thing is certain, Ricky deserves to go out in the manner of his own choosing and I would wait a while for the dust to settle before anyone makes a big decision,” Warne said.
Warne, who retired from international cricket in January 2007, stressed that Ponting should not be blamed for Australia’s departure from the World Cup as Australia only lost two matches in the entire tournament. The two losses came against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755, who
are on fire, and against the hosts http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 who are in formidable form right now.
Warne insisted that Ponting would have to consult his mentors and the people he respects before deciding what to do regarding his future in Australian cricket. He insisted that when a player has achieved so much like Ponting, it is always difficult to say
goodbye to the game which has given so much.
Warne explained that a player first has to worry about performing good enough to be selected in the national team and then he has to see if he still has the energy to go an extra mile while playing for the national side. He added that if a player feels that
he isn’t good enough to be picked up or he lacks the energy to compete at the international level then it is probably time to quit the game.
“The best piece of advice I received when thinking about retirement came from Ian Chappell. His words were “The only hint I will give you is to make sure they say to you 'why are you retiring?’ rather than 'why don’t you retire?’.” Once he said that I thought
'yes I am doing the right thing’,” he said.
Coming into the World Cup this year, Ponting was under tremendous stress coming fresh from a loss against England in the Ashes series. Now, with the loss of the world title, he will surely have to answer tough questions by Cricket Australia (CA) before a
final decision can be made regarding his future.
