  1. The TORNADO!

    lol... just kidding.

If your talking about a motor vehicle, you could try to get the ECU reprogrammed; get larger tires; or different rear-end gears; swap out a automatic for a manual transmission; use air-conditioner instead of rolling down your windows (according to MythBusters); lose as much weight as possible; keep your tailgate up (again, MythBusters); take off your cats, or your entire exhaust (illegal);  rebuild the engine with higher compression heads, pistons, lighter rotating assembly, etc, etc...

All this stuff above is really expensive, the best thing you could do is not press the peddle down as much on take-off, drive slower, and coast before braking.  Or, get a lighter vehicle with a smaller, more efficient engine.

If you were talking about diesel engines in general, you'll want the highest compression possible, or even better, forced air induction via turbos. Multiple turbos for different rpm's would be ideal.  Combustion engines are horribly inefficient though, due to so much energy lost in heat.

Edit: whatever you do, don't listen to the guy above, those things are all scams, and don't do a thing. Some can even harm your engine, same with all the "snake-oil" formulas that don't do jack.  And the one link points to spark-plugs, lol.  Diesels don't use spark plugs.

  2. * Increase compression ratio

    * Decrease heat lost to engine block, piston face, cylinder head.

(Most engines are already close to the practical limits in these regards.

Ceramic cylinder and piston coatings are being investigated.)

  3. Here are a few endeavors :

    Another one  (expensive though): www.intellistick.com

  4. Things will definitely increase the efficiency of your diesel:

    1.  Advance the injection timing

    2.  Cool the intake air.  This helps most if there is a turbo involved.

    3.  Increase the compression ratio / peak pressure

The 2nd option above is the only one that won't make emissions worse.
