I am currently in Mason and Turk but I think there are many vagrants in the area

  3. We don't know what you would consider "expensive." And one person's idea of a "good location: is someone else's idea of somewhere they're "stuck."

The neighborhood is gritty and urban but not unsafe.  It will depend on what hotel you are booked.  There are actually two decent boutique hotels at Mason and Turk.  The Bijou and the Hotel Metropolis are safe and a good bargain.  Don't venture west of the intersection along Turk and head toward Union Square or Market Street.

    Street people in SF are not dangerous for the most part.  As with a trip to any city, don't carry a lot of cash, don't display expensive items [cameras, ipods, cell phones] be aware of your surroundings and at night, if in doubt, take a cab.
