  1. I would have to say that if you were a leader and you had such conflicts, you should take managment courses to help you along the way.

  2. sell the company

  3. As a leader in a company, I am probably considering several priorities - making money, of course, but also the company's reputation and the goodwill with my clients. I will try to do what is right for the clients first, for my employees second, for the company finances third and myself last.

  4. Offer time and a half in pay and see which employee is more motivated to come to work.

This may be a good time to implement new procedures.  Such as...a written vacation request form that the employee needs to fill out and submit to so-and-so with at least such-and-such notice.  Only if the written request is signed and approved by the supervisor can the employee take time off.  If both employees takes the time off anyway, then whichever employee was not approved will be written up upon return or not have a job upon return.  But the form (or hiring contract) should state all consequences.

  5. The biggest thing in any situation is an attempt to make the customer happy. But you named two widely disparate situations and I could not solve them in any similar way. i would need more information and a more solid scenario.

  6. An effective leader anticipates situations and establishes methods to address them before they become conflicts.  For example, s/he might establish protocols (or policies) for dealing with customer complaints so that resolutions were mutually satisfactory.

In the case of the two employees who both want the weekend off for example, an employer establishes a routine of who gets weekends off.  Everyone gets a weekend off in a fixed rotation.  Then if a person wants a different weekend, they would have to negotiate the change with their co-worker that has that time allocated.

Established and fair policies go miles towards reducing conflicts and misunderstandings.
