Leticia Lelli clinches Women’s 200m freestyle meet - 2011 USA Swimming Sectionals, Mount Hood
Leticia Lelli of Sun Devil Aquatic clinched the Women’s 200m freestyle title on day three of the 2011 USA Swimming Sectionals in Mount Hood, on Thursday, July 21.
With her undisputed effort in the 200m freestyle meet, Lelli collected her second gold medal of the championship. She has already captured the gold medal of Women’s 200m back-stroke category on second day of the meet, whereas, her effort in the freestyle
event cheered up the crowd.
She won the title of the event in an Olympic Trials qualification time of 2 minutes and 01.72 seconds. Her time was 8.74 seconds away from the world record of 1 minute and 52.98 seconds, made by Federica Pellegrini of Italy in 2009. She was 6.76 seconds
behind the American mark of 1 minute and 54.96 seconds, owned by Allison Schmitt of USA in 2009, while she missed Melissa J Franklin’s meet record of 2 minutes and 00.71 seconds, with a difference of 1.01 seconds. Nevertheless, the champion’s time was considerably
under the Olympic Trial qualification standard of 2 minutes and 03.19 seconds, set by the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
She was followed by Abigail Houck of North Jeffco Swim Team, who stayed almost three seconds behind her and claimed the silver medal of the meet in 2 minutes and 04.19 seconds. Jordan Mattern of Colorado Stars-C was the third fastest swimmer of the event,
as she touched the finishing wall in 2 minutes and 04.80 seconds.
Mattern was followed by Amber Bouch of Boise YMCA Swim, who stayed 0.16 seconds behind the bronze medallist and touched the wall in 2 minutes and 04.96 seconds. Caroline Piehl and Shara Stafford emerged as the fifth and sixth fastest swimmers, with timings
of 2:05.11 and 2:06.36 minutes, respectively. Kelli Benjamin was seventh finisher in a time of 2 minutes and 06.44 seconds, while swimming officials disqualified Kata Simonovic for an inappropriate start.
In addition, the arena enjoyed the efforts of all participants, while the winners were awarded with medals for their acknowledging swims.
