Lets say I want to start a business providing a graphic design to any companies who needs them.

My target audience are companies and not specific age groups or types of companies either(musicals, movies, etc.). How would this give me an advantage? Despite whether I'm capable of covering all fields with my designs. Also, how could this be a disadvantage for me? I'm guessing that it would give me a disadvantage because I don't really have specific fields to indicate them what kind of designs we specialize in. Is there a way to cover that?

  1. Sorry, but you are not going to go very far.

In order to provide any services of any kind to any business client, you need to know their business and ways of doing things.  That means you have to be specific in the way and kind of advertising that you will produce for your customer.

You are not going to cover all fields with designs.  You might get lucky and produce one product design that a particular company may like, but unless you can make a presentation to your client in the way that interests your client, you will not make another one.

It is like everything else related to business.  You MUST provide fresh new ideas, or you will be dropped faster than a hot potato.  In order to do that, you must know your client and your client's market, and you must specifically hone in on and make a case for particulars that will attract new business for your client.  Sometimes, it is actually better to work from within the client's business, which equates to having experience!

  2. Alrighty, so it seems like you understand what your target audience is in a general sense, now you're just trying to figure out who it is and why, right? Well, the reason why your audience is undefined is because you want to cater to everyone...everyone is not defined, you know? What you'll need to do is focus more on how you're going to get the attention of everyone rather than focus on one particular group...finding out how to do that will be a project in itself! The advantage to all of this is that you're trying to be universal, and that's good. Graphic design is not a profession that targets a certain group of people like some types of cars do (for example, a big, heavy duty truck is targeted to the working contractor...the Chevy Aveo is targeted to people looking to save money, college students, etc.) so what you'd really need to do is focus on the area/demographics that you are willing to place your business in, analyze that, and base your advertising and targeting decisions on that. The disadvantage is that depending on those demographics and the area in which you wish to put your business, graphic designing might not be the right thing for you if it's not in high demand. What you'll need to do is start simple (from home, maybe) and just kinda get your foot in the door and see how far you can go with it..if it starts to fly, then you may want to implement your business plan. The only way to indicate the type of designs that you'll specialize in would be in advertising what you have to offer, depending on what kind of packages and pricing you have as well. It's a bit tough to have a business that is so universal like that, but all you need to do is investigate what the needs of your target area are and how you need/can approach them. Good Luck!
