Question:

Letting go/freeing 3 red-eared sliders?

I have 3 red-eared sliders that I got around 6 months ago or so? from ChinaTown. So I don't really know how old they are because the person hardly spoke English so I didn't get too much information from him. Anyways, 2 of them are almost or about 5-6 inches? & the other one is fairly small, about 4 inches. My parents want to set them free since sooner or later they'll get too big for the tank (35 gallons) and they're getting tired of them. But I know that setting them free will basically kill the poor things.. So I was wondering is there anywhere that we can bring the turtles so that they can be taken care of? I live in Toronto so setting them free is hardly an option since they won't live especially when winter comes. Specifically I live in Etobicoke so anywhere near there like pet stores or something that's willing to take care of the turtles? I don't really know... but yeah, thanks!

  1. don't set them free, it's not just harmful to them, but to natural ecosystems as they may carry captive bred diseases.

find a reptile rescue online they will more than likely take them.

try looking them up on www.kijiji.ca i see them on there all the time! you may also be able to sell them to res breeders.

    good luck!

  2. send them to me

  3. It's illegal to release non-native or captive animals into the wild.  You CAN'T do that.  If you need to find them a home, post on Kijiji or craigslist and find them a PROPER home with a PERSON.

Don't take them to a petstore either.  Most don't take care of reptiles very well at all.  And next time, research your pets BEFORE you buy them!!  It's horribly irresponsible to buy things that you don't even know how to care for.  So PLEASE be the responsible person now and find them a good home with a knowledgeable owner.  These turtles get quite large and need to be homed with someone who understands their needs.

  4. i would try pet stores or even local breeders if you can find any. Also in some places letting wild animals go is illegal so make sure its ok before if you do set them free.

  5. I would call your local pet stores, especially a large chain store like a petco or something, and ask about dropping them off. Such large stores will frequently take in unwanted animals and then give them up for adoption to other people who can take care of them. This is much better for the animal than setting it free!
