Letting go of Phil Neville and Nicky Butt was painful, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, admits that he never wanted two of his home-grown players, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt to leave the club.
The 69-year-old admitted that it was one of the difficult decisions of his Manchester United career to allow the duo to leave the club. The duo emerged from the youth ranks of Manchester United and were part of the famous ‘Fergie’s Fledglings’ which also

With newer talents emerging at the club, opportunities were hard to come by for the duo and both had to settle for a place on the bench for most of the matches. Butt left Old Trafford to join Newcastle United in 2004 and the following year, Neville joined
Everton. Both the players made more than 300 appearances for the Red Devils and spent more than a decade at the club. The duo helped United win six Premier Leagues, three FA Cups and was also part of the famous treble winning team of the 1998/99 season.
Talking to the reporters, Ferguson said, “It’s a horrible thing to say, but you can’t be sentimental in this job. I love the players that I’ve had and I’ve been very, very fortunate to have had great players who have come through my career.”
“At United I’ve had Giggs, the Neville’s, Scholes and Butt, who represented the spirit of the club. All of the players that I have had here have a played a part in my success. So when I see something happening, as in the cases of Nicky Butt and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Phil-Neville-c29904,
I’ve had to release them to other opportunities.” The Scot added
Ferguson added that at one point in time, he was terrified to tell them that they were not part of the playing eleven. He explained that it was unfair to them because they were immensely talented players and had done so much for the club.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Scotland-c756 manager added that it was a very emotional decision to let them leave the club as he knew that he was cutting two loyal strings.
