I just bought a parakeet and I was just wondering when I can let her out.

I have had her for about a week and she is getting a little used to my hand she still wont let me come close to touching her. But I hate to see her cooped up in the cage all of the time. i know it takes time to train but when you had your parakeet how long was it before you let her out??

Also, will it mess up her training if I bought a cd of parakeets talking. She loves to hear other birds but I odn't want it to mess up her training.

  1. If there is any way for you to get her out of her cage, do it so that she will get used to you being around without the cage. Also, leaving her cage door open helps them be more social because eventually she will get curious and venture out. For now you should just try to see if she will get on your finger. Mine still doesn't like being on my finger, but he will get on my shoulder just fine. I just get a stick and get him to climb on that and then take him out and put him strait on my shoulder. He doesn't fly off or anything that way when I am walking around because he's so high up. You could try that if it is just afraid of your hands being too close or something. Good luck!

  2. If you love your little bird you should get his wings clipped. If he free flys around the house you will have to spend a hour or more cleaning up. He will chew on everything. He can fly into window, mirrors or even wall and break his neck. He can fly through a 1" crack in the door. He can chew trough appliance wires and will.
