  1. Yes, the levees will hold.  All the damage done by Katrina has been repaired and the levee system is undergoing a $14 Billion upgrade.

No, we are not on the "verge of Katrina II".

Gustav is not a Katrina and even the most dramatic forecasts don't predict it will exceed a "Category 3" hurricane.

    To Bones:

Most of New Orleans is above sea level, and all of the city was above sea level until neighborhoods weree built on drained swamps in the 20th Century.

New Orleans is a port and HAS to be where it is located: Ports HAVE to be close to the ocean. New Orleans is the largest or second largest port in the USA each year (tons of cargo).

New Orleans is NOT prone to being struck by hurricanes. The last hurricane to hit the city before Katrina was in 1965, and before that were storms in 1947 & 1915. None of those hurricanes damaged the city like Katrina.

Miami and New York are at much greater risk from hurricanes than New Orleans but I don't see you claiming they should be abandoned. Why is that?

  2. I hope it hits some deserted place in Mexico. The last thing we need is for New Orleans to flood again. The river levees should hold but the others, I really couldn't say. I hope so. I don't want to leave again.

  3. It's a lot of money for a landmass that is below sea level and near a temperamental ocean, I love it's culture but could it all be put on slightly higher ground?

  4. NO. The levees will not hold. A city should not be located below sea-level. Yes, if this one hits it will finish where Katrina left off. Hopefully, no more tax money will be wasted rebuilding there. Pick a new site that's above the freekin water.

  5. Hopefully they will. Hopefully the government was human enough to update those decades old and outdated levees.

But after Katrina, you can't really be sure what could happen with the hurricane, or the governments response.
