Levein wants new role for Fletcher
Scotland manager Craig Levein has said that he is looking to play his captain, Darren Fletcher, in a more creative role.
The Manchester United midfielder is the captain of Levein's team, and one of its most experienced players with 49 international caps.
"He's a lovely guy and a fantastic player," Levein said when asked about Fletcher. "I think there is more to come from him. I'm still looking at him and trying to work out how to get the best out of him."
Scotland  played their opening European championship qualifier away to Lithuania on Friday, a match that ended in a frustrating goalless draw.
Fletcher to go forward more
Led by Fletcher from midfield, the side turned in a more inspiring performance than during its 3–0 friendly defeat to Sweden in August, but failed to capitalize on its scoring chances. The match left Levein considering a different role for Fletcher in the team.
"I thought on Friday I saw the energetic part of his game, which was really pleasing to see. But I'd like to see more, I'd like to see him being a creative influence on the game and maybe even providing an end product at times."
Fletcher, who plays as a holding midfielder for United, could also be an asset going forward for his national team. His dead ball accuracy provided Scotland with some hopes of scoring in Kaunas on Friday. He may star in his new role in Scotland's qualifier against Liechtenstein on Tuesday.
Strong leadership
The midfielder was appointed captain of the Scottish team in November 2009, having already served as vice-captain to Barry Ferguson. The 26-year-old is the second youngest Scottish national team.
Levein praised Fletcher's leadership ahead of Tuesday's qualifier. "I think he's got a big part to play, certainly he has a big part to play in the dressing room with regard his attitude and the way he leads by example. I'm chuffed to bits for him."
