If I'm 15 and I ride with a group that does 24mph for 20 miles do you think I could be competitive as a racer, for my age group ?

(& I know its 24 mph my cyclometer is right its with a city group released by speeds, also its not in kph, so don't ask me if I'm sure...PLEASE)

thanks for your help :]

  1. Yes, 24mph is great average speed for 20 miles and should be competitive for your age category. During the time trials with my club, we average roughly 38 km/hr over a 15km all out time trial. The fastest time trialist in our club goes approx. 47 km/hr average speed. 24mph is roughly 38.6 km/hr so your tucked right in the middle.

My only caveat is that you are riding in a pack, and thus, drafting usually has a big influence on how fast you ride. Riding alone, I usually achieve an average of 35 km/hr. In a pack of 10 to 15 cyclist, we easily achieve 38 - 41 km/hr as the load is spread amongst the riders....

You must also consider that you are 15, and will continue to grow and gain muscle mass. Keep on training, but for now, 24 mph is pretty good and is competitive for you age group!

    Regards,

    A.

  2. If your speed is truly 24 mph average for that distance you are about a cat 4/5 adult level, which is pretty good for your age.  Might as well try a race at the junior level and see how you do.
