  1. A= hardest / best skilled

    BB= Easiest / lowest skilled.

  2. In my experience with USAV, here's how I'd describe the levels you're talking about.

    Open:  The highest level playable.  There are usually 10 teams and probably not more than 100 athletes at the adult Open tournament at nationals.  I'd say it's reserved for athletes that receive accolades at the college level.

    AA:  The highest level you've listed.  Solid players with several years of experience and athleticism should be playing AA ball.  The average D2, or D3 college team would be competitive at this level.

    A:  Not as high as AA, but you certainly need to know the game inside and out.

    BB:  Not as high of a level as A, but you must be able to execute basics.  Playing at this level, you'd expect the middle blocker to be able to hit quick sets, and you'd expect the pass to be good enough to allow the setter to set the middle.

    B:  Beginner's level.  B is a good fit for those learning the game and who want to get better.  Usually you'll see higher sets, and weaker hits, and several errors throughout the game.  It should be stressed that B is still competitive, and good volleyball will be played.  It's not the volleyball that you play at family picnics in the backyard.

    Below B you might be able to find a recreational league.  Players here would be participating for exercise or to socialize.

  3. OPEN = top level players (sub Olympic but includes NCAA level)

    AA = top level for most amateur players

    A = highly skilled

    BB = Average to good skills (older A players drop to this in late 30's)

    B = Just above recreational

    REC = (church or backyard)

    EDIT - Riley is wrong
