Levi Leipheimer lining up for his fourth overall win at the Amgen Tour of California 2012
Three times winner of the Amgen Tour of California, Levi Leipheimer is undoubtedly one of the most successful cyclists of the event. He is now targeting the 7th edition of the race, scheduled from May 13th to May 20th 2012.
The Californian stage race is an important part of the cyclist’s season and he trains hard the whole season to ensure his top performance at the tour.
The 38-year-old has a massive success rate at the race, as he succeeded during the 2007, 2008 and 2009 editions.
He finished third during 2010 and second during the most recent version of the contest.
On commenting about this year’s competition he explained, “I know stage 1 is going to be pretty awesome. Carlos [Perez] and I came up with a course which takes in most of the [King's Ridge] Gran Fondo”.
The American started his professional career in 1997 with Team Comptel and represented a number of teams during the time. After spending one year with the team he signed a two-year contract with Team Saturn.
Levi also rode for Team US Postal (2000-2001), Team Rabobank (2002-2004), Team Gerolsteiner (2005-2006), Discovery Channel Team (2007), Team Astana (2008-2009), Team RadioShack (2010-2011).
He accepted an offer from the Belgian side, Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step for the 2012 season.
Leipheimer participated in an incredible number of 13 Grand Tours, two Giros, nine Tours and two Vuelta a Espana participations under his belt.
He occupied the third podium position during the Tour de France 2007, which is his best Tour performance so far.
The cyclist is positive to give his best at the Amgen Tour of California 2012 and also mentioned that the track really suits his abilities.
He cited, “It is really good for me because it is a course where I can stay in my [time trial] position a lot and not have to break my rhythm or get out of the position to stand up. I can use that to my advantage".
Leipheimer has already made his new year’s intentions pretty clear after claiming the overall victory at the Tour de San Luis 2012, including a stage 4 win at the race.
He is definitely lining up for the fourth overall win at the Californian race, scheduled in May 2012.
