Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button promote the idea of a London street circuit – Formula 1 news
Recently reports of London hosting a street race Grand Prix have appeared. The idea has an instant attraction attached to it. London can be a very exciting prospect and a viable option of fitting a race into an already congested Formula 1 season.
As FIA decide on the cost effective policies for 2013, it may also be thinking of the high expense of moving Grands Prix from one region to the other. Having two British Grands Prix would be a good option for Formula 1 to not have to bear those high expenses
of travelling and moving all the equipment required by all the teams.
It already has an audience appeal and sponsorships would not be a problem to find in England for a Formula 1 event.
The idea has been so exciting that Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has said that if the feasibility of a London street circuit is passed he is willing to invest £35 million to promote the race.
Hamilton also believes that Britain would be justified in holding two Formula 1 races in the future.
“Some other countries have two races like Spain and Germany, and arguably the UK makes an enormous contribution to F1, so I reckon that would be completely justified,” he said. “Silverstone is more than just my home race; it is a giant of a circuit, a real
racer's track. The idea of a London race presents a completely different possibility and it would be great to reward our home fans with two races, wouldn't it?”
Hamilton’s teammate and countryman Jenson Button agreed and said that it could cement London’s place as a sporting capital.
“There's a mammoth following for Formula 1 in the UK and a race in the city would be at the heart of everything, easily reachable by public transport. It would be a fantastic race for the drivers and the fans alike,” he added.
It is early stages to predict if the race is going to happen or not but it is definitely an exciting prospect. It is a win-win situation where the sport, the city and the fans benefit from it.
