Lewis Hamilton: McLaren closing the gap on Red Bull but still lag behind – Formula 1 news
2008 Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton thinks that McLaren have managed to close down the gap to the front running Red Bull team, but are still far behind in turning the table of glory.
Hamilton added that some new upgrades are required in the car which will hopefully come somewhere in the 2011 season after which Red Bull will be catchable.
When asked about the prospects of the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, Hamilton joked, “The old circuit is still there at the last two corners, I could use the (old, faster) last two corners to match their pace if I don't take the chicane... otherwise, no!”
The Brit added that McLaren have done well in the last four races to be the second fastest team on the grid but still Red Bull are the target.
Brit added that Red Bulls still have a straight one-second advantage over the other teams in the qualifiers, which is way the poles have gone to them in the opening four races of the 2011 season.
McLaren were the only team which separated the two Red Bull drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, so that the constructors’ championship points were evenly poised. However, as both Red Bull drivers are up in front, the margin is going to open further
in terms of points.
Red Bull are currently leading the table with 148 points most of which were scored by Vettel, but Webber will be eager to put in his contribution as well.
The Brit commented, “F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, nothing comes easy. They have just done a better job. We are second quickest, we can't complain too much. I hope at some stage we have a significant improvement with the car so we have a proper race
with these guys.”
Still Hamilton will start the race from third place followed by Spain’s homeboy Fernando Alonso.
Hamilton will have to watch out for the Spaniard in the first stint because the Brit has a flat spot on his front left tyre which is going to hinder his performance.
