Lewis Hamilton: Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel has the potential to dominate 2011 Formula 1 season
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has said that according to the current situation of the 2011 Formula 1 season, the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel can dominate this season as he is currently in a league of his own.
Hamilton stated that his team is fighting against every other driver on the track but Sebastian Vettel as he believes that Vettel is on another level at the moment. The young German driver has won 3 races out of 4 after scoring a perfect pole position record
up until now with 4 pole positions.
The 2008 Formula 1 world champion is the only driver to defeat the Red Bull driver as Hamilton secured the win for McLaren at the Chinese Grand Prix.
However, McLaren were well off the pace of the RB7 and it seemed that even his teammate Mark Webber cannot compete alongside him during the races.
Other than that, the British driver stated that Vettel currently has a huge lead over him as he is leading the pack with 93 points and Hamilton being his closest rival in terms of points with 59 points in the drivers’ standings.
“Thirty-four points is a very big gap at the moment. But what can I do? He's not really the guy we're racing. It's all the other guys - [Mark] Webber, Jenson [Button], Fernando [Alonso], [Felipe] Massa. That's really where the fight is because it's too easy,”
said Hamilton.
It seemed as if Vettel was cruising during this past weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix before taking the win and Hamilton added that currently, it seems like the moment when Michael Schumacher was dominating the sport back when he used to be a part of Ferrari.
4 pole positions in 4 races is an amazing record according to the 2008 Formula 1 world champion.
“But it is also possible we could catch up and overtake them. Then we might see at the next race they will have a bigger upgrade than us, and it will be the same again. But the gap is only a win and a bit, so for example if he doesn't have a good race in
Barcelona and we win we're back in the fight again,” he added.
Other than that, Hamilton admitted that he does not fear that Vettel has the ability to win the title in terms of statistics earlier than the final phase of the season.
The McLaren driver believes that the season is not over yet as just 4 races have been completed up until now with 15 more remaining. His team along with Ferrari and Mercedes GP can still recover and maybe end this ‘reign of domination’ by Red Bull Racing
team.
