Lewis Hamilton admits his struggle at 2012 Australian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver, Lewis Hamilton has struggled to convert his pole position into a win at 2012 Australian Grand Prix held at Albert Park in Melbourne on Sunday.
The British driver claimed the pole at qualifying on Saturday with an impressive performance.
However, he was not able to achieve victory at the season opener and finished third after following his teammate, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.
Hamilton could not be able to get back into the fight after he was crossed by Red Bull during the safety car period.
Nevertheless, he tried his best to make his comeback into the race but failed to catch up the defending champion, Vettel and ended up trying not to lose his position to Mark Webber who was running at fourth place.
In addition, the 2008 world champion, Hamilton said that his tyres were damaged while he was behind Vettel and came under pressure as Webber was in his chase. He also said that his performance was not that good during the race as compared to the other contenders
while he said that he had a struggling start.
“I damaged my tyres behind Sebastian, then I decided to drop back a little bit so I had some clear air but Mark was definitely putting pressure on. I just struggled out there and got a shocking start which really was the beginning of it all,” he said.
Besides, he said that there were many races yet to come in the season ahead and he just needed to keep his focus on performing consistently throughout the year.
“We have plenty of races ahead so I just have to keep my head down,” said Hamilton.
Additionally, he expressed that he was quite surprised by the performance of the Red Bull drivers after qualifying.
It would be important to mention that Martin Whitmarsh, the team principal of McLaren stated that they were little disappointed at the race result, however, he said it was a good sign for the team. He also said that Button was stronger than he was couple
of years ago.
“I guess it’s a very good sign when you feel a little disappointed by a one-three, so we’ll settle for that!” he said.
