Lewis Hamilton believes Fernando Alonso is the best – Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton believes Fernando Alonso of Ferrari is the best driver in the sport and said that he has a lot of respect for the Spaniard.
Hamilton and Alonso were teammates at McLaren in 2007. However, they failed to develop a good relationship with each other because of their intense rivalry. Moreover, the two-time world champion left the Woking based just after one year.
Even though, they had were never close to each other in the past, but recently Alonso has appreciated the British driver and called him one of the finest drivers in the field. Furthermore, the 31-year-old said that he considers the 2008 world champion his
biggest rival in Formula 1.
Meanwhile, Hamilton has said that his relationship with Alonso has got better and he is pleased to receive such compliments from his old teammate.
“My relationship with Fernando has got a lot better,” Hamilton told F1 Racing magazine. “Finally we've got past 2007 - more so on his side than on mine.”
In addition, he said that he also has a lot of respect for the veteran driver who is currently the best driver in the field.
“It seems that he finally appreciates me as a driver, as I appreciate him. It's equal between us now,” he said. “I believe he's the best and he said that in Brazil about me. I love that he has that respect for me, because I have that respect for him.”
It is to be note that he has joined the Brackley based team in this season after racing with McLaren for a long time. However, he has asserted that he can return to the British team in the future.
“I definitely could race for McLaren in the future because this team is my home,” he added.
The Briton was well in the title contention in 2012, but unfortunately he faced some technical issues which gave away his chances of winning the championship. Nonetheless, he is confidently looking forward to deliver his best at Mercedes in this season.
It will be thrilling to see how he performs alongside Nico Rosberg in this year’s championship.
