Lewis Hamilton confident McLaren can defeat Red Bull Racing team at Monza – Formula 1 news
The 2008 Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has recently stated that he is confident about McLaren’s chances for this weekend as they have the pace to defeat Red Bull Racing at Monza.
“At the end of P2, the Red Bulls were looking pretty strong, but I'm pretty sure they weren't on the same fuel load as us, which is encouraging,” he said.
The Italian Grand Prix is taking place this weekend at the legendary Monza circuit which is probably the fastest track in the Formula 1 calendar at the moment. Since the track does not require much downforce, RBR are not going to be as strong as it has been
at most of the venues this year as their car is reliant on its unique downforce structure.
“We spent today working on wing set-ups - it looked like some teams may have been running lower downforce than us - but once we used DRS we were looking pretty good. It's interesting to see the different downforce levels - some teams are faster along the
straights - but we're faster through the middle sector,” he added.
He also revealed that both Jenson Button and himself were using almost the same setup of Friday and they were trying to get the best out of their Drag Reduction System devices in order to make up for the long straights since they were using high rear wing
settings in order to get the best performance while turning.
Despite the fact that Sebastian Vettel scored the fastest time of the second free practice session of the Italian Grand Prix, McLaren are confident about their chances this weekend as well as Hamilton finished in 2nd place in the
timesheets and was just 3 hundredths of a second slower than Vettel’s fastest lap time.
This weekend is going to be very important for RBR as they have a chance of wrapping up the 2011 Formula 1 championship for good.
