Lewis Hamilton frustrated after German GP – Formula 1 News
Lewis Hamilton was frustrated after being unable to make a strong impression in the German GP because of the changed Pirelli tyres.
The Mercedes driver said, “I have nothing positive to say about these tyres and I don't understand why we struggled so much on them. That's motor racing, but it's
frustrating because the team has worked so hard on them and done such a good job. We've clearly got a good car but it just doesn't work on these tyres.”
Following safety concerns in the British GP, Pirelli were told to provide 2012 spec tyres to the teams, which brought back some problems for Mercedes.
The German giants had struggled with tyre wear since their comeback to the sport in 2010, but they finally managed to get on top of that issue this year, thanks
to their private test with the tyre manufacturers in Barcelona.
However, the return of the 2012 rubber has brought the same issues for the Brackley based squad, which they suffered last year. After qualifying at the front of
the grid, Hamilton was unable to hold his rivals back on race day, as he lacked grip in his rear tyres.
As a result, the Briton had to settle for fifth place in the end, which was not satisfying for him. He would have been aiming for a victory after a strong qualifying
show, but things did not work out for him on race day.
Moreover, Mercedes have been backed from testing at Silverstone, which will make their problems worse. About that, Hamilton added, “We at least got some running
when we did the Barcelona test [for which Mercedes was punished with the Silverstone test ban]. We just have to keep pushing forward and pray and hope that when they bring the new batch of tyres they work on our car.”
After the Silverstone GP, it seemed that Mercedes were going to cause plenty of problems for their rivals in the championship. However, all of their dreams would
have been shattered after the German GP. The team has got some time to improve the performance of their car and if they fail to do so, rivals teams will benefit from that.
