Lewis Hamilton has declared Fernando Alonso the dark horse – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has declared Fernando Alonso of Ferrari the dark horse of 2012 Formula 1 season and says that the Spaniard is capable enough of winning the championship.
“He is the dark horse and he's driving for the dark horse,” the McLaren driver told The Telegraph. “I'm not surprised. He is a two-time World Champion and probably the best driver here.”
After securing an amazing third podium finish in 2012 Monaco Grand Prix held at Circuit de Monaco on May 27, Alonso is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 76 points and he is 3 points ahead of Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Sebastian Vettel
and Mark Webber.
On the other hand, Alonso considers Hamilton one of the main contenders in this year’s championship. Even though, he said that it is very hard to make any kind of projections for the season ahead as there have been six different winners in the first six
races.
However, he still believes that the 2008 world champion will surely give a tough time to all the other drivers.
“We are looking to November and it is Hamilton we want to be close to. It is impossible to predict how the season will evolve, but I would hardly believe it will stay like this. Still, if I can tip one driver, I would pick him because he's the only one who
can make a difference even with a car that is not a winner,” he said.
The British driver is presently at fourth position in the drivers’ rankings with 63 points. Besides, he is 10 points behind Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and 4 points ahead of Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.
Moreover, he has emerged as one of the most consistent drivers in the season so far as he secured third podium finish in the first three races out of which he claimed pole in first two of them. Afterwards, although he lost some crucial time due to the poor
pit stop strategy in two of the last three races however he still showed convincing performances.
Over and above, he is aiming to perform well in 2012 Canadian GP which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10.
