Lewis Hamilton pleased with his victory in the United States Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton is pleased with himself after he beat Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
Hamilton took the victory after a thrilling battle with Vettel and said that it was a great weekend.
“To be able to beat Red Bull and Sebastian is definitely a tough challenge but we managed to do it,” Hamilton said. “We weren't so bad in the first stint but it was very difficult to follow and make the pass and my tyres went off. We pitted two laps before
Sebastian and the traffic really worked out quite well because the traffic usually catches me out, but it worked slightly in my favour at some points. What a great feeling to win the first grand prix here and I won the last one in the USA as well.”
The McLaren driver admits that overtaking the Red Bull car was not easy. He appreciated Vettel saying that he had a strong pace almost everywhere on the track. He pointed out that attempting to overtake on turns four, five, six and seven was immensely difficult.
He was more than a second behind the Red Bull car for most of the race but in the end the new circuit worked well for Hamilton earning him a first place 0.6 seconds ahead of Vettel.
Hamilton had been very determined to challenge the pace set by Vettel and his championship rival, Fernando Alonso. The driver also said that he was in more need of a Grand Prix win than Vettel since his opportunities to win have been constantly marred by
McLaren’s reliability issues. He had earlier expressed his wish to earn a win for the team before he leaves and also to have the first win over new Circuit of the Americas.
The last United States GP had taken place five years ago during Hamilton’s debut season and he had won that one as well.
Hamilton’s victory accompanied by Vettel’s second and Alonso’s third place has left the championship to be decided in the last race. However, Vettel has once again widened his lead to thirteen points over Alonso.
