Lewis Hamilton positive about title chances in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Lewis Hamilton is confident that the 2013 Formula 1 title is very much in his reach, but admits that Mercedes need to take a huge step forward in order to make that possible for him.
The Briton finished second behind championship leader in Canada and said, “Vettel was pulling away from me at a second per lap in Montreal. We're not going to gain a second before the next race. But we can definitely beat the rest. As for the championship
there are still 12 races left. It's not impossible. But we need to make another big step with the car.”
When Hamilton made a switch to Mercedes at the end of last year, he downplayed any chances of fighting for the title. He said that the team needed to develop step by step and rested all of his hopes on the 2014 season, when there will be a lot of uncertainty
because of the engine rule changes.
However, the 28-year-old driver has been pleasantly surprised to see such a strong performance by the Silver Arrows this year. He has managed to score three podiums out of the first seven rounds whereas his teammate Nico Rosberg managed to beat the Red Bulls
in Monaco to secure the first victory of the year.
Due to this, the 2008 world champion is confident that he will be in a position to challenge Vettel in certain races this season.
When asked about the speed of the reigning world champion, Hamilton said, “His pace is not demoralising at all. He has had a car like that for years and is still doing the same thing. But we are coming up fast and Nico beat him in Monaco so it can be done.
I want to give the British fans a good result for sure.”
However, it will not be an easy task for the German squad to deliver a strong result in the next round of the season, as the track in Silverstone is quite harsh on the tyres. As a result, other teams such as Red Bull, Ferrari and Lotus will be in a position
to fight for a victory because of the fact that they do not struggle with tyre wear.
