Lewis Hamilton ready to surge ahead at Singapore GP 2010
Racing is all about taking risks and quick decisions at the right time. However, this passion and pace at times can cost a lot, just like it did to McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton. The Italian Grand Prix at Monza for Hamilton was nothing close to how he had
planned as it only resulted in his second pointless race in his last three races of the 2010 season.
The much anticipated round at Monza ended in disappointment for Hamilton right at the first lap when he went for an overly-ambitious overtaking stir on Felipe Massa from Ferrari. The effort only brought Hamilton off the track, landing into the gravel which
resulted in serious damage to his steering.
However, the aggressive driver hasn’t lost hope in his bid to win the second title of his career as he still steadily holds the second place in the Driver’s Championship and is ready to get back to the top, right from the next race.
The driver is hopeful and optimistic firstly due to the never ending support that McLaren has always extended towards both its drivers and secondly because he firmly believes in his fighting skills.
As he returned from Monza, leaving behind all the bitter memories, Formula One’s official website talked to him asking about his fears and aspirations for the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton kicked off the conversation by explaining that this was not the first bad experience of his life and over time, he had learned to cope with such situations. He further added that in such circumstances, one needs to remember the lessons learnt
by past incidents and to move on with a rejuvenated spirit. That is exactly what Hamilton plans on doing.
As per some F1 experts, McLaren did not chose the right package for Monza as going with a low downforce configuration was not the best move. However, Hamilton commented that at times, making accurate calculations was difficult.
Hamilton further explained, “After qualifying, maybe I felt it wasn’t the right way to go, but we had a look at how the race could have gone, and there were definitely some positives. Mainly, I needed less fuel than the high-downforce cars, because I was
carrying less drag, and, most importantly, I had the potential to pick off cars on the straights, because of my top-speed advantage. That wasn’t guaranteed, of course, because we didn’t get to see how the car would be affected in the slipstream through the
corners, but we saw in the race that it was pretty much a stalemate out there. I’d like to think that if I’d stayed in the race, I could have done some passing.”
Hamilton exclaimed that the most important aspect under such situations was the support and backup from his team which had always been there for him. He was sad that everyone at McLaren had worked really hard and whenever one of the drivers was unable to score
in a race, the teams is badly hurt and disappointed.
In the last three rounds of this season, Hamilton has had two non-finishes while one of the races was won by him. Five more races are yet to go and the contention is becoming tougher with every passing day as there is no room for any mistake. Let’s wait
and watch if the British driver is able to clinch a good finish in all of the next races or the same level of inconsistency is replicated by Hamilton which might turn fatal at this juncture.
