Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes behind Ferrari and Red Bull – Formula 1 news
Lewis Hamilton believes that Mercedes are still behind Ferrari and Red Bull in terms of race pace and that needs to be sorted out soon in order to fight for victories with consistency.
The Briton was surprised to see the speed of his rivals in the recently concluded race and said, “You really don't know what's around the corner, but the Ferrari and the Red Bull, I don't know what they've done to their car, but it was massively quick in
the [Canadian] race for some reason. So we really have to figure out how to improve, and that's what we are going to work on.”
Hamilton qualified second on the grid last time around, but he was expected to lose places because of high tyre degradation. However, this was not the case, as the race pace of Mercedes was not bad at all.
This allowed the 2008 world champion to hold his position for quite some time in the race. He looked good until the closing stages of the race, when Alonso attacked from behind and stole the second place on the podium.
Despite that, Hamilton would have been pleased with the overall outcome, as he secured the third podium of the 2013 Formula 1 season. On the other hand, his team-mate Nico Rosberg did not face any major issues too, which allowed him to finish fifth.
These are positive signs for the Brackley based squad, but they might suffer in the upcoming British GP, where tyre wear will once again come into play.
Hamilton is hopeful that he will be able to score some solid points in his home race, as he is in good shape at the moment.
The 28-year-old driver said, “I want to give the fans a good result, for sure. Going to Silverstone is always a special one for me, and I want to win it, in my heart. I want to be as high up as I can possibly be. It's important to have a Brit on the podium.”
Things are shaping up nicely for Mercedes, as it seems that they have finally resolved their tyre wear issues. If they continue improving, they will definitely be in a position to win another race this year.
