Lewis Hamilton says he is expecting a stiff fight on Sunday’s race – Formula 1 news
Lewis Hamilton says he is expecting a tough fight at the Australian grand Prix despite both the McLarens topped the qualifiers.
Despite finishing ahead of everyone Hamilton’s predictions are justified as the difference between him and the other cars was marginal. To give some perspective his teammate Jenson Button was only tenth of a second behind him and almost 0.4 seconds clear
of Romain Grosjean in the Lotus at third.
Hamilton added that tyre management might play a major role as competition is very tight.
“I think it's going to be incredibly tough and very intense through the race,” he said. “I think looking after the tyres is going to be key, as it always is, and getting off to a good start. We'll have to see what the strategies are like and safety cars,
we'll be keeping an eye out for all of those. The team need to be on point and so do me and Jenson, so we'll make sure we do that.”
Hamilton still was confident of his chances and said that the teams’ determination to be number one is why the team has been able to top the qualifiers. He said that coming in second to Red Bull in the last two seasons were efforts put in to be number one
and a good start to their campaign will play a major role in their bid to do so.
Hamilton had a particularly poor season in 2011 and was hungry to improve on his previous performance. The season is just starting and there is still a long way to go, but the start McLaren has got will give them a good boost to get even better as the season
goes on.
“It's an incredible feeling to be back here and get off to such a good start,” he said.
It will be interesting to see how Sunday’s race shapes up, for now the race seems to be between McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and Lotus for the top spots. Ferrari looked nothing like the team with the illustrious history that they have but discounting them
may not be wise.
