Lewis Hamilton secures second consecutive pole position at 2012 Malaysian GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has secured his second consecutive pole position in the qualifying at 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix held at Sepang International Circuit on Saturday.
After grabbing the pole in the season opener at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia last week, Hamilton set the best time of 1 minute and 36.219 seconds in the qualifying of the second GP and claimed his second consecutive pole of the season.
Moreover, Hamilton was followed by his teammate, Jenson Button who set his best time of 1 minute and 36.368 seconds. In this way, McLaren pair had been able to lock out the first row for the races in succession.
Michael Schumacher of Mercedes AMG finished third in the qualifying with the time of 1 minute and 36.391 seconds.
After an unfortunate retirement in the first race on last Sunday, Schumacher’s third place in the grid was quite pleasing for him and had been his best result since his comeback in F1 couple of years ago.
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber secured the fourth place after setting his best time of 1 minute and 36.461 seconds and was followed by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus. It would be quite interesting to know that Webber and Raikkonen both set the same time however,
the Finnish driver would have to start from the fifth place in the grid because of penalty for a gearbox alteration.
Webber’s teammate, Sebastian Vettel could only manage to secure sixth place in the grid for the second race after setting the time of 1 minute and 36.634 seconds.
Romain Grosjean of Lotus set the seventh best time of 1 minute and 36.658 seconds and was followed by Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.
Fernando Alonso of Ferrari secured the ninth place in the grid for the second race after setting his best time of 1 minute 37.566 seconds. The Spaniard was followed by Sauber’s Sergio Perez.
Alonso’ teammate, Felipe Massa who had been in the midst of many speculations nowadays concerning his replacement in the Red team, finished at twelfth after following Pastor Maldonado of Williams. In addition, Massa’s car was damaged by Maldonado during
the Q2.
Bruno Senna of Williams ended at 13th place after he set his best time of 1 minute and 37.841 seconds while his team could not make it for the Q3.
Force India’s pair of driver, Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg finished at 14thand 16th place while Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso ended between them.
Perez’s teammate, Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber was behind Hulkenberg with the time of 1 minute and 38.069 seconds which was quite disappointing for the Japanese driver.
Besides, HRT had comparatively good session as both the drivers managed to qualify within the 107% time limit and would hopefully be in the grid of second race at Sepang.
