Lewis Hamilton takes the victory at the United States Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton took the victory after an exciting battle with Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel at the United States Grand Prix this Sunday.
Hamilton had qualified for the second position on the grid and had been worried about a rough start being on the dirty side of the track. Meanwhile, Vettel had secured the pole. As the race started, the McLaren driver was pushed down another position following
the two Red Bulls in the lead. It took him another four laps to regain his initial position with the help of the DRS. Hamilton kept pushing his car to catch up with Vettel for 41 laps of the race. He overtook the Red Bull in a thrilling attempt during the
next lap using the DRS again. He continued his lead right up to the final lap keeping himself just more than a second ahead of the Red Bull. He finished the race being 0.6 seconds quicker.
Vettel had been in lead throughout the weekend but was unable to match Hamilton’s determination to win the race and finished in second place. His teammate, Mark Webber, also suffered a bad race day after he was forced to retire due to an alternator failure.
However, Red Bull achieved their main target of the day by securing their third consecutive constructors’ championship.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who started from eighth position, was seen struggling throughout the race. Ferrari deliberately opened his teammate Felipe Massa’s gearbox to earn him a five-place penalty and to improve Alonso’s position. Webber’s retirement also
helped him and he gained a third place by the end of the race.
Massa, who had agreed with his team to help his teammate, was still able to keep up his pace and finished fourth. Hamilton’s teammate, Jenson Button, had started from the far back at twelfth position but raced well enough to finish fifth. Following Button
in the sixth and seventh position were Lotus F1’s Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean.
After the thrilling race of this weekend, the fight for the drivers’ championship carries on and will be decided at Brazil next weekend. Vettel will start the last race of the season being 13 points ahead of his rival Alonso.
