Lewis Hamilton to decide his future over Formula 1 summer break – Formula 1 news
Lewis Hamilton is planning to decide over his McLaren future in the Formula 1 summer break.
Hamilton’s contract with McLaren matures at the end of the 2012 season. The Brit’s decision has been the target of much speculation. At one point, it looked clear that Hamilton will stay with McLaren for another year.
After the reports of Hamilton getting a big pay cut for his new contract due to the economic downturn, it is unclear whether the Brit will take the cut and stay on with McLaren or look to change his teams.
After hearing about the pay cut Hamilton and his manager stated that they will be fighting for the most minor things in the contract. Things like keeping the trophies as McLaren does not allow its drivers to keep their trophies with them rather at the McLaren
headquarters. While team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said that such minor things are not going to be a major hurdle in the signing of a driver like Hamilton.
Hamilton has also said that he has a degree of loyalty to McLaren but he will make his decision ultimately based on maximising his chances of success.
“To be honest, you have to base your decisions on much, much longer than such a short period of time,” Hamilton told Russian news agency R-Sport. “Only half a year cannot decide six years of partnership, or actually 13 years of partnership. I've been with
them since I was 13, so it's 14 years, so it's much more than these small details, it's a much, much bigger picture.”
“We haven't sat down and discussed anything yet but I'm sure over the summer break, when we have the summer break it would be nice to get something in place. That would be a time when we can be more relaxed and make the most sensible decision for the future,”
he further added.
At the moment, Hamilton is looking forward to the race in Germany where he will be featuring in the 100th Grand Prix of his illustrious career.
It will be interesting to see how he fares in the coming races of Hockenheim and Budapest the results might become the deciding factors of him staying with or leaving McLaren for 2013.
