Lewis Hamilton wants Mercedes to improve - Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton wants the team to push hard in order to stay in the championship hunt. He has started off the 2013 season positively and wishes to
match the development pace of rival teams Red Bull, Ferrari and Lotus.
The 2008 World Champion was criticised for his move to Mercedes this year, but things have worked out positively for him and the team until now. Although he was
not expecting to be battling for victories, he is currently number three in the Drivers’ Championship.
Despite that he feels that his team needs to take a step forward, especially in terms of improving race pace, in order to fight for victories with consistency.
He said, “I feel like we're holding on by the skin of our teeth. The guys at the factory need to keep pushing because we're not that far off and if we can just
make that next step we can close the gap with them.”
Last year, the German giants looked strong in the opening part of the season and managed to challenge other teams for victories at certain race tracks. However,
the lack of development pace cost the team a chance to score points with consistency towards the end of the year.
Looking at that, Hamilton said, “I'm very proud of what the team have done getting the car turned around to where we are already. I feel very fortunate to be where
we are points-wise and finishing-wise but of course we need to keep pushing.”
On the other hand, Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg has not enjoyed a decent start to the season and he is way behind in the championship. He encountered a few
technical issues in a couple of races, which forced him to retire.
However, the 27-year-old did enjoy some luck in the Bahrain GP, when he managed to take pole position due to the decreased track temperature. Despite that, he was
unable to look after the tyres well and dropped down quite a few places. He finished in ninth place eventually, which was not what he would have wanted.
This clearly shows that Mercedes have not fully gotten rid of their tyre wear issues and need to address this problem as soon as possible.
