Lewis Hamilton worried over his position on the grid for the United States GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton is worried over his grid slot for the United States Grand Prix after he qualified second in the qualifying round on Saturday.
Hamilton is concerned about being on the left side of the grid as all the even numbered grid slots will be; complaining that it is slippery.
“I'm not really concerned about the first corner, I'm more concerned about the dirty side of the grid,” Hamilton said. “I did a little launch from it earlier on in FP3 and it was quite slippery so hopefully tomorrow is just about getting a good start. It's
so wide in turn one that I don't think really much can go wrong generally; I might be wrong! Obviously I don't want to get in the way of Sebastian's race but I do want to win so I'm going to try my best to get through cleanly.”
He pointed out that the track was still as slippery as it had been during the final practice while the rest of it was improving. There were also concerns mentioned over the pit lane being slippery as well. He is uncertain what can actually be done about
the problem but thinks that cleaning that side might help. Hamilton and the drivers that will be behind him in the left lane of the cars, which also includes his teammate Jenson Button, will be requesting the FIA race director, Charlie Whiting, to clean the
left side so that the drivers will have an equal chance of getting a good start in the race.
Hamilton had a tough qualifying round against Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel for the pole position and is hopeful that he will have an encore up to turn one. However, he insists that it might become difficult doing that in the rest of the race due to Vettel
being so quick and that the position does matter on this track.
The Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa are also going to face the same problem. Massa, who had initially qualified at seventh, was pushed to sixth due to Romain Grosjean’s penalty. He is worried that it will be a slow start.
