After two awards , Lewis Williamson hopes to join F1 someday
The Autosport awards were quite an event where Sebastian Vettel was crowned the Driver of the Year, Kamui Kobayashi took the best Debut Driver of the Year award and later on, highlander Lewis Williamson was named McLaren Autosport
Young Driver of the Year.
It was definitely one of the best moments of the driver’s career when he collected the award from IndyCar Champion and fellow Scotsman Dario Franchitti and DTM winner Paul di Resta.
Williamson was the runner-up in the Formula Renault Championship in Britain this year and was awarded with a trophy, a TW Steel watch and a cheque of £100,000 in front of the best drivers in the world at the Grosvenor House Hotel
in London. He stated that he was in a “dreamland” and it got even better as he won the Chris Bristow trophy as well that was presented by the legendary Nigel Mansell.
“I wasn't feeling nervous - we had nothing to lose, but to win the award is amazing. I went to the test days and just concentrated on doing everything I could to the best of my ability,” said Williamson, who won five Formula Renault races this season and took
four other podiums and five pole positions.
Williamson drove for McLaren in the post-race youngsters test sessions and became one of the six young drivers who took part in a two-day evaluation at Silverstone where he was given the opportunity to driver a Formula 2 car and
a Mercedes DTM racer.
Lewis took the battle for the Formula Renault title to the very last race but was unfortunately unable to beat Tom Blomqvist. His team, Manor Motorsport was extremely pleased with his performance and he is expected to race in GP3 series which is a part of the
F1 grand prix support package.
“GP3 is certainly what we're looking at for 2011. It would be a natural step towards Formula One,” he added.
Williamson joined Atech CRS GP and became the fastest driver on the track out of the other 29 drivers when he joined GP3 for testing after a last-minute call-up.
On top of that, Jackie Stewart was extremely pleased with Lewis’s performance in 2010 and he believes that the young Scotsman has something special in him.
“It's terrific for Scotland to have another talented young driver coming through,” said Jackie.
