Lexi Thompson finishes inside top 20 at Virginia
American Lexi Thompson, who has been troubled about her performance in recent tournaments, has finally silenced her critics as she performed well at the Kingsmill Championship, held last week, at Williamsburg, Virginia, United States.
Although Thompson was not able to put an end to her victory drought at Williamsburg, her solid performance helped her finish tied for the 14th position on the leaderboard.
The American star started the tournament with heaps of confidence as she fired a 67 in the opening round, putting pressure on her nearest rivals.
Getting off to a good start gave Thompson enough room to play more comfortably on the second day.
The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) phenom, who is best known for her solid swing skills, set foot on the course on Friday with even more vigour. She registered a 66 to further cement her position on the leaderboard.
Commentators said that despite a strong roster that featured big names like Stacy Lewis of the United States, Cristie Kerr and Na Yeon Choi, Thompson grabbed much of the attention on the first two days of the LPGA tournament.
However, the rising star could not maintain her momentum in the final two rounds as she posted a 72 and 71 in the third and fourth round respectively.
Thompson was expected to do much better at Williamsburg as her fans wanted her to get back to her winning form once again.
Although her victory drought is not long enough to make her disappear, her performance in some of the recent tournaments signalled tough times ahead.
The recent blow to the LPGA titan was that she missed the cut in two consecutive tournaments. She performed below average in the Safeway Classic 2012 and CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 as she could not make the cut.
Observers said that players like Thompson are generally put under scrutiny by fans whenever they get off the winning track.
They said that the coming tournament will be very crucial for American golfers as they are struggling to regain their lost positions in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
The next tournament where Thompson can atone for her lapses is the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, scheduled to be held from September 13-16, at the Royal Liverpool Club, United States.
