Lexi Thompson finishes tied for 5th at New Jersey
American Lexi Thompson, who finished runner-up at the Mobile LPGA Classic 2012, posted an overall 207 to finish tied for the 5th at the ShopRite LPGA Classic 2012.
The tournament, held at the Seaview Resort Course, Galloway New Jersey, turned into a tough confrontation when most of the big names were sidelined by their rivals.
However, Thompson remained resolute in all the three rounds and displayed a good performance. Although the American star got off to a shaky start, she bounced back in the final round, as she posted a decent
67 to consolidate her position on the leaderboard.
The rising star kicked off the final round confidently, but she let down the fans when she shot a double bogey on the second hole. She offset it by draining two back-to-back birdies on the par-5 3rd
and the par-4 4th hole.
Other contenders also put up a tough fight and displayed a decent performance. Stacy Lewis, who won the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, knew what it took to remain atop the leaderboard. She registered a 201 to claim
the coveted title.
Thompson cheered up her fans when she made an eagle on the par-5 9th hole. On the back nine, she reeled off 3 birdies, further strengthening her position on the leaderboard.
Speaking to the media at the end of the prestigious tournament, the young prodigy said that she was not happy with what way she kicked off the opening round.
“Yeah, actually I started off pretty bad. I doubled the second hole. Bad shot. Then I finished strong. I made some birdies, and I dropped a few putts, so that definitely helps,” the merican golfer said.
She said that she picked up pace after the second round, and bounced back. Regretting her slow start, she said if she had avoided playing too many careless strokes, she would have piled up a big score early.
When asked how her performance at the Sybase Match Play helped her, Thompson said that she gained plenty of confidence after putting up a tough fight against the winner Stacy Lewis.
She praised Stacy Lewis for her performance in the current season.
“Yeah, I've actually played with Stacy a good amount of time. She's really consistent, pretty long, too, so it helps that she's got a tremendous short game, too”.
