Lexi Thompson glad to be back at Prattville
American Lexi Thompson, who is all set to defend her title at the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012, said she is glad to be back at Prattville as she still relishes her last-year success in the prestigious tournament.
Speaking to the media during her pre-tournament interview on Tuesday, Thompson said that she can still remember those moments when her father was on her bag helping her become the youngest star to win a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) event.
Since the American star was not the Tour member at the time of Navistar LPGA Classic 2011, her victory was not counted as an official one.
“It feels amazing to be back here. It was a great experience, especially having my dad on the bag caddying for me. I can't even describe the feelings coming up the 18th hole, it was just so overwhelming just to experience all the fans cheering for me coming
up 18,” Thompson said.
The young star appears to have what it takes to record a win, but her performance has been a little below average in some of the recent tournaments, putting her under scrutiny.
Despite her vow to defend the coveted title at Prattville, Thompson’s presence in the roster is not being regarded as intimidating as most of the top-50 LPGA contenders have decided to grace the tournament.
However, observers said that no matter how tough the field may be, a strong and surprising finish cannot be ruled out because the history has repeatedly shown that last-round comebacks are not unusual.
Observers also pointed out that the American star has finally been able to regain her momentum in the last two tournaments, posting good finishes. They said the fresh comeback can help Thompson perform well this time.
Thompson took part in the Kingsmill Championship 2012 where she finished tied for 14th position — something enough to boost her confidence. Then, the last week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 also proved to be lucky for the LPGA titan, as she
recorded a tie for 17th position on the leaderboard.
“They (the last two finishes) gave me a lot of confidence the past two weeks. It was my first time to England, so I got the full experience of the English weather. It was definitely different golf but the last two weeks have been really good for me,” the
defending champion said.
