Lexi Thompson appears to be enjoying her game, as she recently proved what many had thought would be near to impossible for her in the strong field of the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
American Thompson grabbed attention in the first major championship of the 2012 season, as she finished tied for the 22nd.
However, analysts said that the rising star was not expected to display such a stellar performance in the fearsome field that featured LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) titans like the current world number one Yani Tseng and the defending champion
Stacy Lewis.
Thompson rose to fame when she racked up her first LPGA title at the Navistar LPGA Classic held at Prattville Alabama, in September last year, gaining the limelight. She carded a stunning 17-under 271.
Thompson proved her mettle in amateur golf too, as she became the youngest amateur golfer. She said in one of her interviews that she has a simple strategy that is viable and productive.
“Golf is my life. I started playing when I was 5, taking after my brothers [Nicholas, 27, is a PGA Tour player, and Curtis, 17, is preparing to play for LSU]. My driving and irons are the best part of my game. Growing to be 5-foot-11 has certainly helped,”
the rising star said.
The year 2011 was the most momentous one for the young American, as she racked up several titles, also becoming the youngest winner on the European Tour.
However, Thompson said that finishing tied for 10th in the US Women’s Open was the best experience.
She said that she was thrilled to find her name in the field of the most prestigious event of the LPGA Tour.
“The US Open was really nerve-racking. I can still feel that first tee shot. Luckily I was off the 10th but my legs were shaking as well as everything else,” Thompson shared her feelings in another interview.
The last event of the 2012 season also went well. She faced some of the most fearsome players in women’s golf, but held her nerve throughout the 4-day tournament.
She looked completely fired up in the third round, as she carded a 68. She kicked off the round by reeling off 3 straight birdies.
She stunned the spectators yet again on the difficult par-3 5th, draining her fourth birdie on the front nine.
