Lexi Thompson says Lydia Ko a "consistent" player
American Lexi Thompson has praised Lydia Ko for her success on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), saying the rising star is a “consistent” player.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour during her pre-tournament (Navistar LPGA Classic 2012) interview, Thompson said that she has actually played with Ko, who belongs to New Zealand and still plays as an amateur.
Ko came into prominence after she won her first LPGA title at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, becoming the youngest player ever to achieve that honour.
Thompson was also honoured with the same title when she won the Navistar LPGA Classic 2011 at the age of 16. However, Ko appears to have eclipsed Lexi as the Kiwi amateur is currently 15 years old.
Since Ko is not an LPGA member, her victory at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 is not counted as a professional one. Moreover, the young prodigy has told in one of her interviews that she does not intend
to join professional golf at the moment as she has to finish her high school first.
Thompson has her reasons to put her trust in Ko’s abilities, as the amateur star not only gets appreciated by LPGA contenders, but also by her bagman Guy Wilson.
Ko stood firm in gusty winds at Liverpool where she participated in the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012. Wilson said that he liked the way Ko pulled herself together in a roster packed with big names and inclement
weather that rattled most of the top-ranked players.
“In those conditions, most 15-year-olds would have started crying and just given up, because it was so hard out there," Wilson said. “But she grinded it out, even after she made a triple on the 14th, to finish
with a couple of birdies. She never gives up”.
Thompson said that Ko is likely to become a big star. “I've actually gotten to play with her a few times. I played with her last week in the British. She's just a very good player, she's really consistent,
and once I saw her take that lead there on the 18th hole, you know, she's just a natural player. She's born with a gift”.
