  1. I live in Lexington and so was interested in the report about that.  Apparently Lexington is the highest in terms of "residential and transportational footprint," I guess as opposed to pollutions that commercial businesses put off.

    Anyway, to answer your question - Lexington as a city is very spread-out, with neighborhoods throughout the city covering several square miles.  There's not a good deal of public transit here; we have a bus system but certainly no subway or trains like larger metropolitan areas do.  

    There's not a major "freeway system" here like you'd have in larger cities, so most of our driving is done on pretty congested streets and roads with lots of starting and stopping.


  2. The short answer is, these are the areas with the most coal-fired electric power plants. Nothing we do in the US is as polluting as burning fossil fuels for energy and transportation, and nothing is as unnecessary, given the alternatives which are available.
