Question:

Lexus RX300 or Pontiac Vibe?

I am looking to buy a used car. I want something roomy, good gas, safe, hatchback or small SUV. My budget is $12000 max. I had pretty much decided on a 2004 or 2005 Pontiac Vibe (good gas, all the features I was looking for, good price but not the best safty ratings). I just found a 2000 Lexus RX300 with 51000 miles in my price range. It has much better safty ratings but not as good gas and its older. I can't find everything I want in my price. Which should I buy? or does anyone have a better suggestion.

  1. Stick with the Pontiac Vibe.  The Lexus will be more expensive to maintain and run since it requires premium gasoline and most of the maintenance really should be done at the dealer.

  2. Don't get sucked in by the brand. It's nice to own a Lexus, but when you're done signing the papers, all you've done is bought an 8-yr old car that is out of warranty. And yes, they are expensive to work on.

Go with the Vibe. It's pretty much a Toyota, anyway, and it built on the Corolla/Matrix platform. The engine/tranny/electricals, etc. are all Toyota, and it's the only Pontiac with decent resale value.
