Li Na aiming to break into the Top-10 – Tennis news
Reaching the world number four spot in the WTA Premier Rankings last year, Li Na is once again all geared up to book a place in the Top-10 ratings. She will compete in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal and even losing the
title match will award her enough points to enter the coveted Top-10 rankings.
She had a fierce battle against the 16th seeded Czech contestant, Lucie Safarova, in the semi-final brawl. The Chinese tennis ace lost the opening set but made a valiant comeback in the sets to follow, settling the final
score line at 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in her favour to earn a place in the title brawl.
"In the beginning I was trying to shoot as hard as I could, and I was making a lot of mistakes - so I knew I had to start putting the ball back in the court more," Li explained after the match. "This is tennis. You have to put
the ball over the net and back in the court. It looks easy, but sometimes it can be hard to do. When I was 5-1 down, I thought if I shot hard four in a row, I'd lose the match. So I had to change a little bit. I was just trying to take it point by point.”
She has been in supreme form throughout this tournament and registered the biggest upset of the event by nailing down the world number three, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the quarter-final round. Li Na is currently having a 29-11 winning
record for the season so far but certainly wants to improve it to climb up the WTA Premier Rankings.
Currently holding the 11th spot in the world, Li Na is suffering from a drastic title drought this season and desperately needs to win the Rogers Cup but it is easier said than done. She will have to go one-on-one against
the current world number one six from Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova, in Monday’s delayed final. The 22-year-old Czech is rated as the hot favourite for winning the Rogers Cup on Monday, yet Li Na will not come empty handed from the final even if things turn
against her. She will surely enter the Top-10, displacing the French number one, Marion Bartoli.
