Li Na can surprise the top seeds at the US Open Championship in New York – Tennis News
Former French Open Champion, Li Na, has suddenly found her supreme run of form just before the start of the US Open Championship at New York. She was forced out of the London Olympics in the first round by the Slovak superstar,
Daniela Hantuchova, but the Chinese superstar has found her way back into the form with sublime runs at Montreal and Cincinnati.
Li has reclaimed the number eighth position in the world rankings and looks set to break into the Top-5 players by the end of the year. The task is never easy considering some big names amongst the list of five top superstars in
the women tennis but the way she has played in the recent past, she can be a surprise package for the top seeds in the US Open Championship; claiming important points to climb ahead of her rivals.
Coming back to her stunning form at the hard courts of the Montreal during the Rogers Cup, the Chinese number one ousted the local wildcard entrant, Eugenie Bouchard in the second round of the tournament before forcing out the
superior seeded Italian, Sara Errani, in the following round. She plonked the second seed Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the quarter-final and won an epic three-setter against the Czech star, Lucie Safarova; bouncing back a set down to claim a final berth.
It was a remarkable performance from the 30-year-old Chinese superstar who has been struggling in the recent past to put up a show of her standards. She lost in the second round of Wimbledon and couldn’t survive the opening round
battle at Olympics. So, it was a welcome final showdown for the right-handed Chinese who locked horns with the Czech number one, Petra Kvitova, and after an intense battle; lost in three sets.
She flew to American to play in the Western and Southern Open at Cincinnati; plonked the Romanian beauty queen, Sorana Cirstea, in the opening clash before dispatching the Swede qualifier, Johanna Larsson, in the second round.
She ousted the top seed Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska, for the second time in successive weeks to claim the semi-final berth.
Former world number one, Venus Williams, was her next victim who fought well but couldn’t survive a three-setter. German number one, Angelique Kerber, was the fellow-finalist who was seeded superior than Li. The Chinese lost the
opening set miserably but bounced back to win the following two and lift the first trophy of the current season.
So the former world number four from China can upset the top seeds at US Open and lift the crown.
