Li Ning China Masters 2012: Sourabh Varma sends Hsu Jen Hao packing to storm into quarter-final
India’s emerging young player Sourabh Varma defied all odds to storm into Men’s Singles quarter-final as he played flawless badminton and overpowered his higher ranked opponent Hsu Jen Hao of Chinese Taipei on Thursday, September 13, in China.
The un-seeded Sourabh, who has been placed at number 39 in Men’s Singles world ranking, played attacking and positive badminton against Hen Hao who is World Number 30 at the moment.
Sourabh was in tremendous form on court as he played in a smooth and aggressive fashion and remained successful in grabbing victory in straight sets while taking 42 minutes on the court.
Jen Hao, who has been impressive on court in the tournament, could not prove his worth against his Sourabh and remained unable to cope up with the pace of rallies. He crashed out without putting up strong show and lost the match in a one-sided fashion.
In the opening set of this pre-quarter-final battle, Sourabh was impressive on court as he played fast badminton from opening points and remained successful in setting up a tremendous lead at the initial stage.
Taipei shuttler, on the other hand, could not live up to the expectations as he failed to stop the progress of his rival and eventually remained far behind on score board until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the in-form Indian player continued showing his impressive form without dropping down the pace of rallies and eventually finished off the opening game with a stunning 21-12 score on the board.
The second game was slightly better when Jen Hao played with impressive speed but failed to set up even a small lead as his Indian opponent was on a different level.
Sourabh played composed and positive badminton as he remained impressive on court and took a reasonable lead until the break.
After the break, Sourabh remained on track and he did not show any mercy to his Taipei opponent all the way to end up the contest with a 21-16 score on the board.
Sourabh finished up this round-of-16 battle in straight games with a spectacular score of 21-12 and 21-16.
