Li-Ning Singapore International Series 2012: Jiayuan Chen struggles in Women’s Singles first round
Jiayuan Chen, an emerging shuttler from Singapore, had to struggle hard to get pass the Women’s Singles first round as she narrowly defeated Maziyyah Nadhir of Indonesia at the Li-Ning Singapore International Series 2012 on Wednesday, August 15, in Singapore.
The in-form Jiayuan, who has been seeded at number three in the championship, had to put in extra effort to overpower her talented Indonesian opponent and managed to win the match in hard-fought three sets.
The higher ranked Singaporean player found an expected start and bagged the opening set but lost the second one. Nonetheless, she proved her mettle by playing tremendous badminton in the final game and sealed off victory by working hard for 50 minutes on
court.
The un-seeded Maziyyah, in the meanwhile, lost the opening game but played to her maximum potential and took the following set to level the score.
The Indonesian shuttler was positive in the final game but failed to show her brilliance in the ending points and lost the match with a decent total on the board.
In the opening set, both shuttlers started their run in a positive leaving no room for each other. Until the mid-game interval, the score remained quite close as the game remained at the same level.
After the break, the higher ranked Jiayuan changed her game plan and started to employ aggressive shots which helped her to take the first game with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the second set, the intensity of the battle continued in the similar fashion and both shuttlers progressed at the same speed until the score reached at the ending phase.
At this crucial stage, Jiayuan executed a few wrong strokes and the second game slipped from her hands with a tight score of 19-21.
In the decider, Jiayuan played positive badminton as she did not let her rival to dominate the game and remained ahead until the break.
After the interval, Jiayuan continued her elevated show of top quality game and managed to win it with a reasonable score of 21-18.
The third seeded Jiayuan emerged as the winner in this epic battle with a 21-17, 19-21 and 21-18 margin on the board.
