I want to set up a bar at the various parties that I cater.

What are the laws/liabilities of doing this?

I live in California if that matters?

  1. I live in WA state and I think we are almost as strict as your state.  I am sure you will have to have a license for alchol.  Even if you don't you will have to follow state laws on serving.  And to make matters worse you & the various people you are catering and serving for are usually equaly responsible.  So check with state regulations.  Also ask your Insurance Agent.  There could be a clause in your policy already.  Protect yourselve!  People are sue crazy.

  2. You probably need a liquor license (check with an attorney) ....  You can be charged with a felony if you serve a minor ...  YOU and the client are responsible if someone leaves the party and kills or hurts someone on the way home, if they have an alcohol level reading
