Liam Broady ousts Wayne Montgomery to the semi-finals – Boys’ Singles US Open 2012
British contestant, Liam Broady, prevailed over Wayne Montgomery after the close combat between the two players on Friday. Broady marked his 7-6(6), 7-6(4) victory in the quarter-finals of US Open Boys’ Singles
at the Flushing Meadows held in New York, United States.
The 18-year-old Brit confidently stepped on the hard courts and adopted a very agile game plan to dominate his rival. He drew the first blood and clinched a 2-1 lead but immediately the scores evened out to 2-all
in the fourth game. The South African contestant proved to be a tough challenge for Broady and ended the set with a tie-breaker.
After a close battle, the British participants successfully emerged to the front line and claimed the hard-fought opener. Both players committed double faults five times but the 18-year-old pounced two aces,
converting 12 of 16 points. On the other hand, Montgomery secured 55 percent first serve accuracy and luckily converted all the two points presented.
In the next set, the right-hander British continued with his rhythm and squared the scores similar to the previous set. The match progressed peacefully, as none of the players dared to break each other’s serves.
The 17-year-old South African tried his best to upset the challenger but was unable to prevail over his opponent, closing the set with another tie-breaker round. Broady ultimately nudged his way and stamped his 7-6(4) win.
The 13th seeded British junior bombarded two aces, but had an average first serve of 55 percent and converted 18 of 27 points offered. Montgomery struck four aces across and manifested
a higher first serve precision of 62 percent, pocketing 23 of 31 points.
For future, Broady needs to adopt a more proactive strategy, if he intends to continue his voyage in the Grand Slam championships. Nonetheless, his performance has shown drastic improvements at the US Open this
year. Previously, he could not rally past even through the qualifying round of the Wimbledon Champions and lost in straight sets at the hands of the Italian, Thomas Fabbiano.
Broady will next encounter the eighth seeded Japanese Kaichi Uchida, who gave a shocker to the top seeded Belgian native Kimmer Coppejan, 6-1,6-4.
