Liam Pitchford hoping high for GAC Group 2011 World Table Tennis Championships
The second ranked English player Liam Pitchford will be hoping to get attention on the GAC Group 2011 World Table Tennis Championships which is scheduled to begin on Sunday at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The 17-year-old player from Chesterfield, England will be competing in the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles categories of the event. There would be 700 players from around 14 countries of the world participating in the competition. He has to show a superb
performance in order to shine out amongst the rest.
He will join forces with Paul Drinkhall from Cleveland in the doubles. The duo has to compete in the qualifiers to reach the main draws of the event. The competition in the Doubles main draw is expected to be tougher as the Chinese players will be dominating
the main draws.
Liam Pitchford said, “I am happy with my form at the moment, “I am just working on getting a few little parts of my game ready before the World Championships start.”
Liam and Paul will have to compete in two to three qualifying rounds before they earn a place in the main rounds. Therefore, they have to win all the matches in order to make a place in the main rounds.
Paul and Liam will be pairing up for the first time in the doubles. If they both show their best game, they might earn a place in the main draws easily.
The World Championship will give the players a chance to test their playing skills. This will help them with the preparations for the 2012 London Olympics.
Liam Pitchford has won the team silver and men’s doubles bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, India. He partnered with Andrew Baggaley in the Games. He is a strong contender for a place on the men’s team for the upcoming London
Olympics.
Pitchford further said, “I am happy with how it’s going Next season I am looking to play a few more pro tours to hopefully get a higher ranking and boost my chances of selection.”
