Liam Tancock claims Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day three – British Gas Swimming Championships
Liam Tancock of Loughborough University earned gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke playoff on third day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Monday, March 5.
With the upcoming the 2012 London Olympic Games, the British Championship is of utmost importance as it offers a chance to all swimmers to ensure their berths into the British team to Olympics.
The 26-year-old Tancock stayed prominently ahead of his competitors in the double lap backstroke swim. He faced no hindrance in confirming his place in the British team to London and captured gold medal of the event in a comfortable manner.
Tancock proved his dominance for the crown of the event by clocking a time of 53.16 seconds. With his commendable pace, Tancock remained 1.30 seconds faster from his closest competitor, Chris Walker-Hebborn of Ellesmere Co, who snatched silver medal of the event by completing his swim in a time of 54.46 seconds.
The third spot of the event was earned by Marco Loughran of Guildford Ct, who was 0.67 seconds slower from his foregoing competitor and surfaced on the finishing end for bronze medal by posting an effort of 55.13 seconds.
Subsequently, Kate Haywood proved her mettle for the gold medal of Women’s 100m breaststroke. The 24-year-old Haywood devastated hopes of her opponents in the two-lap breaststroke discipline and pocketed gold medal of the event in a time of 1 minute and 08.07 seconds.
The gold medallist remained nearly one second ahead of her strongest rival, Stacey Tadd of Bath University. The 23-year-old Tadd remained 0.89 seconds away from her former finisher and emerged on the victory stand for silver medal by clocking 1 minute and 08.96 seconds.
She was followed by Sophie Allen of Stockport Mo, who was 0.49 seconds slower and tapped the finishing blockade with an effort of 1 minute and 09.45 seconds for bronze medal.
Haywood was delighted with her top finish in the breaststroke discipline and articulated that she will try to make her country proud at the home Olympics. Furthermore, the winners received accolades for their fascinating performance at medal ceremony after the session.
