Liang Wenbo misses out a 147 while beating Matthew Stevens – 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Liang ‘The Fearless’ Wenbo has beaten the world number 14 Matthew Stevens by a frame score of 5-4 in a best-of-nine frames last-32 match of the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open tournament.
This event is being played in Victoria, Australia from July 18 to July 24, 2011.
It was yet another impressive performance from the Chinese player, Wenbo, who currently holds the 30th spot in the world rankings.
Wenbo, who previously shrugged off Ben Woollaston in the final qualifying round, produced high standards of game to see off the Welsh Dragon, Stevens. He showcased classy breaks of 71, 111, 51 and a magnificent 120 which included 15 reds with 15 blacks before
he went out of position on the final yellow ball.
The 33-year-old Welshman, Stevens, who could only knock in breaks of 63 and 88 was pretty impressed with the Chinese cueist, who recently won the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup with his teammate Ding Junhui in Bangkok, Thailand.
Stevens told the media the Snooker World Cup has given Wenbo a lot of confidence. He stated he tried his best but Wenbo was too much for him.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I started off well and was 2-0 up but missed a pink into the middle and he scored very heavily," said Stevens. Every time he got in he played well and took his chances.”
“Winning the World Cup has done him no harm. He had been struggling a bit but a win like that in Thailand has made him dangerous again,” added Stevens.
In the end, Stevens remarked he has no excuses for his defeat, as he thinks the best man won.
Stevens remarked, “I'm not too tired and I'm not one of these people making excuses about the travelling and that's why they haven't played well. I'm looking forward to going home but I still gave it 100 per cent out there.”
The 24-year-old Wenbo has now set up a potential clash against the former world champion, Ken Doherty, in the last-16.
